Why DIY-ing your Fitness Rarely Works

Doing The Right Things

I was talking to someone at the gym the other day who was telling me about how he was trying to lose weight. He was doing all of “the right things” but it wasn’t working. He had gone into ChatGPT and input his information and started to follow what came out. And yet, after a short stint of losing weight he was feeling worse.

Sure, he has lost some weight, but he was still in pain, tight and inflexible. And, after the initial weight loss happened he was feeling tired, sick and lethargic. Low energy led him to overeating again and the weight was creeping back on.

A Common Tale

His story isn’t new. It’s a tale I hear almost every week. It looks really easy to DIY our way to a leaner, stronger, more fit body. Until we get into it and realize that there are obstacles we didn’t expect.

  • What do I do when I can’t workout as often?

  • What happens when I run out of energy?

  • How do I keep going when I lose my initial motivation?

  • What about when I stall and the weight doesn’t keep dropping?

  • Why am I feeling so lethargic, sick and just want to take a nap all the time?

  • Do I really have to give up the foods I love forever?

A Lesson From HGTV

One of my recent favorite shows is called “Help, I Wrecked My House” where designer Jasmine Roth and her team go in and help people fix their homes after they have failed DIY renovations.

The show is both entertaining and instructional.

Hazardous wiring, poor framing and poor builds showcase how difficult it is to do what true experts do.

“I thought it looked so easy from the YouTube video” the homeowners cry.

It’s not.

And often, their DIY efforts put the family at risk. From dangerous pipes, faulty wiring and unstable builds homeowners break down when the realize that their efforts have done more harm than good.

Your Faulty Wiring Efforts

The same is true for many people I meet with.

Crash dieting has left them with a metabolism that is difficult to master.

Yo-yo dieting has left them with less muscle and, over the years more fat than they had before.

Doing “all the right things” has led them to dangerous levels of fat, blood pressure, cholesterol and difficulty moving without pain.

With the rise of AI it’s becoming even more common to see the DIY mentality, albeit with increasing false confidence and it’s leading to many people finding themselves worse off than they were before.

The Expert Fix

Fortunately many DIY mistakes can be fixe with the right plan and the right amount of time.

It may take 6 months or a year to fix your metabolism after you’ve dieted it to death.

It may take 12 to 18 months to build back the muscle you lost by going extreme on your diet and cardio (or worse, your Ozempic).

But, most DIY mistakes CAN be reversed with the right plan.

You just need a little guidance.
